THE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL RACE IS A MESS. EACH OF THE PARTY’S FACTIONS HAS LINED UP BEHIND AN INDIVIDUAL CANDIDATE: SOCIAL CONSERVATIVES ARE BACKING MIKE HUCKABEE. ECONOMIC CONSERVATIVES ARE BEHIND MITT ROMNEY. JOHN MCCAIN GETS SUPPORT FROM THOSE CONCERNED PRIMARILY ABOUT NATIONAL SECURITY AND FIGHTING TERRORISTS. RUDY GIULIANI ONCE HELD THAT CONSTITUENCY, BUT HE LOST THEM TO MCCAIN.

A MAJOR REASON FOR THE BREAKUP OF THE OLD REPUBLICAN COALITION – THE REAGAN COALITION – IS THERE IS NO ON DECK HITTER. FOR DECADES THERE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A REPUBLICAN IN THE WING WAITING FOR HIS TURN AT BAT. THAT ISN’T THE CASE THIS TIME AND THAT’S WHY EVERYONE SEEMS SO DIVIDED.

THEY – AND WE – HAD BETTER GET OUR ACT TOGETHER. IF CONSERVATIVES CAN’T UNITE BEHIND A SINGLE CANDIDATE INSTEAD OF DEMANDING POLITICAL PURITY, WE ARE GOING TO GET HILLARY CLINTON OR BARACK OBAMA WITH ALL OF THE PROBLEMS THEY WILL CAUSE. HIGHER TAXES, NEW SPENDING AND LIBERAL SUPREME COURT JUSTICES -- NOT TO MENTION INEXPERIENCE AT FIGHTING TERRORISM – AREN’T THESE REASONS ENOUGH TO GET REAL? THIS IS POLITICS AND POLITICS IS ABOUT COMPROMISE. I’M CAL THOMAS IN WASHINGTON.

Once again, we hear only about "2" candidates in the Democratic party. What about Senator Edwards? He's right up there with the other 2. I'd like to hear more about Fred Thompson. Regardless of which party one supports, it would seem that all candidates would get a fair and equal shake when the media, columnists, etc. discuss who is running. Regardless of the amount of money you have, or those supporting you, all candidates should be recognized for running for this very important office. As an individual always taught by my parents that you can do whatever you want in life if you try hard enough...it certainly seems like our citizens are getting the lesson that only those with enough \'backing\' and \'money\' will get a shot at President of the Unites States. How sad. And how unfortunate for future candidates with excellent skills and credentials who will be turned off from campaigning because they won\'t get equal and fair attention. Let\'s start making sure ALL candidates are mentioned-this race is far from over. image

Dear Mr. Thomas, Thank you for being a real journalist with a backbone and the character to speak positively about Dr. Ron Paul in your January 17th commentary. The federal government now consumes 44% of the GDP, almost double what it confiscated in the 1960s. 53% of the U.S. citizens, and/or residents get some form of assistance from the government. When government grows it does so at the expense of the private sector by confiscating from those that produce and redistributing it to those who do not. Government also finances its expansion by expanding the money supply which creates inflation, the hidden insidious tax that plunders all the tax payers. Our government has us exactly where it wants us. I agree that “republicans” are addicted to handouts and after nearly 100 years of degenerating into the social democracy we have today, electing Ron Paul is a long shot. However, the idea of the founding fathers seceding from the British Empire was the longest of long shots. An informed and reasoned electorate is the key to taking our country back and you are in a position to help get the word out. With the help of real journalists, and patriots who dream of restoring our liberties and resurrecting the Constitution, President Ron Paul is a possibility. I urge you to do what is possible to spread the message. image
